Keepers
Most of these portraits are from my book - Keepers: The Ancient Offices of Britain.
The book tells the history of Britain through people’s titles. These titles were either inherited or the job comes with a title.
A chance reading of an obituary changed my approach on how to take a portrait and I found the formula that works for me. The Obituary read Hermon La Strange, Lord of Thirteen Manors, Hereditary Lord High Admiral of the Wash. The family have lived in Old Hunstanton since the Doomsday book. I thought ‘Now there is a portrait’
Before I set out to do a portrait, I have a vague idea of what I am looking for. I have a picture in my mind’s eye. For these portraits, there is discussion with the person beforehand; I try to do a recce of the location and then I hope I can get at least three of the following in the portrait: HISTORY, LOCATION, UNIFORM, SYMBOL, AN ACTION.
The portraits for Keepers were primarily about the position and not the person. Similar portraits I make now are more about the person in that position so I like, to include an object that has some significance for them.
